Department of PG Studies and Research in Microbiology
The post graduate Department of studies and research in Microbiology was established in main campus during 2005. The department is presently housed at the bioscience complex. The new building has spacious furnished laboratory, theory and seminar hall. The department has good facility for teaching and research. The course content is designed to cover all the aspects of Microbiology and practical orientation for microbiological methods. In order to encourage the students to take up research programs every year, the department is organizing special lecture series and seminars by inviting scientists from well recognized national and international Institutes.
The department has two faculties doing quality work in teaching and research. They have trained well through different training programs organized by reputed institutions. Faculties are doing good research in the area of industrial microbiology, environmental microbiology, plant pathology, agriculture microbiology, Immunology and medical microbiology. Dr. B. Thippeswamy was awarded with post doctoral fellowship for one year to do research in United States of America. The Department has organized number of national level seminars by inviting speakers from reputed institutions like, NII, CCMB, IISc, CFTRI and NCL. So far, four research projects were completed which are funded by UGC, DST, and two ongoing projects are funded by DBT, and VGST. The Department has taken up the project concern to Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), restricted to Shivamogga district for the development of tool for diagnosis for the disease. Five students from the department have qualified state level and national level exams like SLET and CSIR/UGC.
Vision Statement
The department of Microbiology shall strive to become a centre of excellence in teaching and research, to transform students into committed, selfless and value added citizens with sound scientific knowledge, to make highly economic and eco-friendly environment to bring down the global warming with microorganisms, to reduce biohazards of pesticides, insecticides on biosphere with microorganisms, to develop vaccines for upcoming pathogens to improve the health with low cost.
