With the mission of "Education for All," distance education programs have become invaluable in providing higher education to working professionals, housewives, farmers, laborers and others who are unable to access traditional higher education for various reasons. The Directorate of Distance Education, established in 2002 and recognized by the Distance Education Council (now the Distance Education Bureau) of UGC, has been offering Open & Distance Learning (ODL) courses since the academic year 2002-03. This initiative has made higher education more accessible and inclusive.

The Directorate of Distance Education initially launched postgraduate courses such as Master of Arts in Kannada, English, Hindi, Sanskrit, and Urdu, as well as Master of Science in Mathematics and M.Com. Over the years the various undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma and postgraduate diploma courses were added. Initially, 652 students enrolled in the inaugural year (2002-03), but this number has grown to several thousands in subsequent years. In the academic year 2020-21, UGC introduced the Online Program for Kuvempu University, adhering to UGC ODL and OL Regulations 2020. From January 2021 onwards, 12 online courses were introduced including B.A., B.Com., BBA, MA (in 6 subjects), M.Com., M.Sc. (Mathematics) and MBA

Since 2002, the Directorate of Distance Education (DDE) has transformed access to higher education, benefiting lakhs of students across India and significantly contributing to the increase in the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER). For over two decades, DDE has successfully brought education to the doorsteps of working professionals, housewives, farmers, laborers and those unable to pursue traditional higher education, particularly aiding students from rural areas. Offering a diverse array of bachelor's, master's, diploma and special courses which Kuvempu University stands out with its superior infrastructure, dedicated faculty and robust facilities.

Many graduates of Kuvempu University's Distance Education programs now serve the nation in various fields such as administration, defence, law and education, showcasing the program's impact and reach. Recognized as a Centre for Online Education, the DDE continues to innovate and expand by promoting online education to new heights and ensuring that quality education is accessible to all.
